These are the shallow divers. They can hit 8 to 10 feet with mono. They have a very nice wobble with a hunting action. I found that using the screw eyes was killing the action of the bait. I started to use high grade stainless steel wire. I make all the baits from scratch. This lets me integrate the wire into the solid resin body from the start. It is not a through wire construction bait but it has very strong holding power. The way I put the lips into the baits from the start along with the build-up of the epoxy coats there is no way that lip is pulling out. I guess what I am saying they will hold for the musky’s also.
This is a shallow running smelt. This is the style lip I run at night during the late fall and early spring when the fish are on the night bite. It has a nice lazy wobble that is not too crazy but enough that it stands out from all the other bait that is around. That is the hardest thing to deal with while fishing the night bite. There are times you will bring in your lures and they are loaded with minnows and smelt that got stuck to your hooks. I like to find the pods of thick bait and work the outside edges. The walleye’s know where the bait is. You just have to catch them before they get into the middle of it. Big fish in the colder water of later fall and early spring are a bit lazy. With all the plenty bait around they are reluctant to chase after a lure with so many choices around. The key was to have a bait that has a nice wobble in a larger size that would work at the slower speeds (.9 to 1.3 mph). The other factor was to have a bait that would not dive too deep and pass under the feeding walleye’s.
I like to run this style lip in the summer off my downriggers. The baits runs great at the 2 to 3 mph zone also. It will dive to about 8 to 10 feet with a nice zipping action. I love to run it on my wire line to boot. 12 lb wire 300 to 350 back in late summer off Geneva on Lake Erie.
